(The Hill) -- Fortress Safe recalled about 61,000 biometric gun safes following the shooting death of a 12-year-old boy, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced Thursday. "The biometric lock on gun safes can be opened by unauthorized users, posting a serious injury hazard and risk of death," CPSC wrote in a statement. CPSC said consumers can falsely believe they properly set the biometric lock function, but instead it is in the default to open mode. This allows users, including children, to easily access the safe. The regulatory agency pointed to a recent lawsuit that claims a 12-year-old boy died from a firearm obtained from one of these safes while noting 39 incidents of users' reporting that their safes were accessed by unpaired fingerprints. The recalled safes were sold from January 2019 through October 2023 at a variety of stores including Bass Pro Shops, Cabela’s, Scheel’s, Sportsman’s Guide, Optics Planet, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Gander, Rural King, Lowe’s...Another Blackhawks' rookie is looking to make his impact

CHICAGO — Naturally, there is one rookie on the Blackhawks who is getting the majority of the attention. But as Connor Bedard has made his much-heralded debut over the last week, so has another high draft pick for the team in the Kyle Davidson era. There are a few in the Blackhawks organization, along with fans, who were eager to see him take the ice, too. That's defenseman Kevin Korchinski, who was the seventh overall pick of the 2022 NHL Draft, selected with the pick acquired in the Alex DeBrincat trade with the Senators. After spending last season in the Western Hockey League, he was given the chance to start the season with the NHL club. The 19-year-old defenseman has played in four games this season, averaging 19:33 minutes of ice time per contest. On Monday against the Maple Leafs, he registered his first NHL point on an assist on Tyler Johnson's goal in the second period in a 4-1 win in Toronto.Early in the season, Korchinski has been paired on the Blackhawks' second defensive...Texas land being wrestled away from cities, thrown to where rural rules roam free

HAYS COUNTY, Texas (Austin Business Journal) -- When representatives from MileStone Community Builders LLC arrived in the city of Hays early in the morning on Sept. 1, legal documents in hand, the doors of the modest one-story brick building that serves as City Hall were closed — and would be through the long Labor Day weekend.Companies — first Walters Southwest, then MileStone — have for nearly two decades tried to build a neighborhood called Hays Commons on 500-plus acres, which could more than double the population of the small city of about 250. But no one had been able to reach a deal with city leaders concerned about the potential adverse impacts of dense development on the Edwards Aquifer, which serves as the city's primary water source. But that September morning was the dawn of the first day of a new state law that allows landowners to remove themselves from the regulatory reach of cities. Leaders at MileStone intended to do just that. The city of Hays had to send someone to...‘Bosch: Legacy’ Season 2 review: Half the show works like gangbusters. The other half is just a bust

Nina Metz | Chicago Tribune (TNS)Titus Welliver has played Harry Bosch on television for nearly a decade, starting with the seven-season Amazon crime series “Bosch.” Once a grizzled cop who would squint into the harsh Los Angeles sun and uncover ugly truths hiding in dark crevices, he has since retired from the police force. “Bosch: Legacy,” now in its second season on Freevee, is proof that Harry’s story is more interesting — and closer to the noir sensibility hinted in the original — as a private investigator teaming up with the wily and poised defense attorney Honey Chandler, played by Mimi Rogers. At first glance, they’re opposites. He’s gruff and hardened by life, happy to do his job in jeans and a T-shirt. She’s methodical and strategic and impeccably turned out. They share a world-weary cynicism that has not yet diminished their shared interest in righting a few wrongs. And their mutual respect remains unmuddied by sexual tension. Together, they are a formidable brain trust, t...High school football: St. Thomas Academy, Mahtomedi, Hill-Murray, St. Agnes grab sectional No. 1 seeds, while Two Rivers is seeded … fourth?

The Two Rivers football team finished with a 7-1 regular-season record and the top spot among teams in Class 5A Section 3 — and fifth overall — in the Class 5A Quality Ratings Formula put together by Minnesota Scores.Yet the Warriors were assigned the No. 4 seed when the section bracket was revealed Thursday. The top spot went to St. Thomas Academy (6-2), which finished the regular season one spot behind Two Rivers in the QRF. Bloomington Jefferson (7-1) received the No. 2 seed. The top two spots come with first-round byes. Most surprising was that Two Rivers, a section finalist last season, was seeded behind three-win Apple Valley. The Warriors will now play Tuesday in the section quarterfinals, where they will host fifth-seeded Hastings (2-6). Hastings handed Two Rivers its lone loss way back in Week 2, edging the Warriors 9-7. Michigan’s 52-10 win over the Gophers on Oct. 7 was complete and total domination. The second-ranked Wolverines allowed Minnesota one touchdown pass and very little else over 60 minutes of game time at Huntington Bank Stadium. The outcome was chalked up to undefeated Michigan being one of the best teams in the country, a favorite to win the Big Ten Conference and reach the College Football Playoff for a third straight season, while Minnesota fell to 3-3 and has continued to struggle with consistency this season. No one doubts the gulf between the two Big Ten programs, but now that outcome might be controversial or even tainted.Yahoo Sports reported Thursday the Michigan football program is under investigation for violating rules prohibiting in-person scouting of future opponents. The Athletic said there was “credible evidence” the Wolverines have successfully stolen signs from opposing teams this season.Yahoo pointed out sign stealing is not technically prohibited, while scouting oppon...Upcoming 15th Street closure announced in Troy
